About Our Keynote Speaker – Jim Martinson
Jim Martinson is a Paralympic athlete, inventor, and the visionary behind adaptive skiing. As a double amputee, he has broken barriers in sports and technology, inspiring generations of athletes and entrepreneurs alike. His story is one of resilience, innovation, and impact.
Jim Martinson grew up in Sumner, Washington, and now resides in neighboring Puyallup. He is married to Colleen and has two sons, two daughters, five grandchildren, and one great-grandson.
In 1981, Jim founded Shadow Products, a sports equipment company specializing in gear for people with physical disabilities. His innovations include:
The Race wheelchair (10k, marathon, and track)
The Kan Ski (for water skiing)
The Mono Ski (for snow skiing)
Basketball and tennis wheelchairs
Many other adaptive sports products
In 1992, his company was acquired by Sunrise Medical Quickie, where Jim continued working in product development and training until 2000.
Jim is a Vietnam veteran who lost both legs above the knees near Da Nang in 1968. He began racing wheelchairs in 1976 and went on to compete in road races, track events, and downhill skiing. Though now retired from competition, Jim enjoys long cycle rides, skiing, golf, and mentoring others through coaching and instruction.
